The Cove Miami —
Edgewater

Miami is a city that enjoys a unique contact with nature. This goes way beyond its worldwide fame as a beach destination and the beauty of its ocean views. Biscayne Bay, its islands and tropical parks also define the character of this city that enjoys the proximity of keys, coral reefs, wetlands and forests as well.
How can the design of a high-rise building reflect the richness of nature in this city? Could we think of a high-rise building as more than a repetition of identical floors?
These questions triggered the design process of the Cove project. The fluid forms of ocean waves and sand dunes became the inspiration to design different areas of the project: some of the slabs are sloped to generate different scales in the interior space, and to introduce a reminiscence of the seascape in the façade of the building.

The project has 3 levels of amenity spaces on top of the parking floors. The curved slabs generate an unusual spatiality for these areas. Some spaces have tall tilted roofs that capture dramatic views of the sea and the sky. Other areas have tilted stepping floors that can be accessed from different levels. They generate interior connections between these floors without the need to use elevators. The steps accommodate a TV / movie room and the spinning area of the gym. The project seeks to reproduce feelings and sensations generated by exploring nature: the possibility of surprises, contrasts, unexpected encounters, and changes of perspective. Just like landscapes are generally perceived in motion and offer multiple surprises in any route, the building changes as people move inside it. Movement is not only horizontal or vertical but also a combination of both. The amenities are oriented towards sports and wellness. The special interiors designed for these functions are extended outdoors with decks and terraces at different levels for the swimming pool, the dining room, the yoga room and the spa.

The residential units on the other side, are designed as spaces of tranquility and disconnection from the street life. All units expand towards the bay and sea views that define the special character of the space.

Working from home -occasionally or permanently- is part of contemporary life. The project offers a complete floor of working areas inside the building so residents can have dedicated spaces for working just a few floors below their homes: individual offices, conference rooms and a co-working area. All these amenity areas are designed with nature as an inspiration: the selection of materials and the forms, make reference to outdoor experiences. The working areas recreate the atmosphere of a forest and the idea of working in nature. The dining and game rooms are inspired by the lightness of beach structures and the relaxing spirit of beach life. The gym, yoga and spinning spaces are cladded in wood and offer unique views of the bay and the ocean. The site has a unique waterfront condition: it offers direct access to the baywalk without crossing any street. From a residents lounge in the first floor, a door will open directly into the baywalk, providing a perfect starting point for jogging or strolling along the waterfront.

The project floor plates offer a long perimeter -emphasized by the diagonal design of the facades- for a relatively small area. As a result all bedrooms and living areas have long glass walls with open views to the East, South and West. The larger units have glass corners for the great room and master bedroom.
